Kickoff of the Rally Season

The fifth annual AirForums “Back to the Basics” Rally at Hidden Springs State Forest was featured as the Southern Illinois Unit’s April rally.  We had six units from Illinois, Iowa and Florida.

The rally was very laid back with no schedule and no business meeting.  The only guarantee was that there would be a campfire burning all weekend.

The weather was perfect for boondocking and nobody ran out of battery power.  Lots of great food was prepared over the fire and Saturday’s potluck had a wide selection of gourmet dishes.

Take a look at the photo gallery below.  Hopefully we can fill out the entire loop next year with twelve units.

What a difference a week makes…

This photo was taken just a few days ago, but the weekend forecast is for sunny weather and 50 degrees.  The trailer will be de-winterized and kick off the start of the camping season.

Register now for the Region 5 Rally, Springfield, IL

Dear Fellow Airstreamers and Friends,

It is my pleasure to welcome you to our 39th Region 5 Rally.  Not a WBCCI member?  Not a problem.  All Airstream owners are welcome.

This year our rally will be held in Springfield, IL located in the heartland of America.  Old Route 66 runs right through Springfield where you’ll find Shea’s Gas Station Museum, Cozy Dog Drive-In and Route 66 Twin Drive-In Theater.

Of course there are several Abraham Lincoln sites in the area.  Lincoln’s New Salem State Historic Site, Lincoln’s Tomb, and the new Lincoln Presidential Library & Museum await your visit.

The State Capitol has just completed a $40 million renovation in all its Victorian splendor and the Governor’s Mansion is open for tours.

Abraham Lincoln was born in Kentucky, spent his boyhood in Indiana, and was a Congressman in Illinois before becoming President.  You could say he was a member of Region 5.

We’ll be staying at the Illinois State Fairgrounds this year.  The Fairground Campground can accommodate up to 300 units with water and electricity.  A limited number of sites have sewer.  Best of all, the campground is centrally located to the abundant activities.

Once again you’ll be able to register online using a credit card or PayPal.  Of course checks are also accepted by contacting our treasurer, John Swearingen.  Prices start at $155 and you can register and pay online through the following link to the WBCCI registration page.

Our theme is “Walk With Lincoln”, so let’s shake the cobwebs out of those Airstreams and register soon.  This is an event you don’t want to miss.  If you have any questions, please contact me.

Monte Barksdale

Region 5 President

Humble Airstream on NBC

Region 5’s Jerry and Louise Humble recently had the occasion to spend 7 days in Chicago watching the filming of a portion of the TV show “Chicago Fire” that utilized their 1972 Airstream. The opportunity arose when Louise was looking over the WBCCI web sites and noticed an interesting article on the Region 5 site.

The article noted that the producers of “Chicago Fire” were looking for an Airstream trailer of the early 1970s vintage and included a phone number for a contact at the Airstream dealer “US Adventure RV” in Chicago.  Jerry contacted him, he in turn gave Jerry the contact number of the owner of a company called “Picture Cars” who, after talking to Jerry, then contacted the studio. Louise sent pictures of their rig and the producers agreed that it was what they wanted.

After Jerry spent an extremely busy week getting the rig road ready for the 300 mile trip, the Humbles pulled the rig to the Cinespace Chicago Film Studio which is located a few blocks west of the Chicago Loop.  There they were able to observe the modifications made to the trailer prior to its being towed to the location site.  A studio employee then towed the rig to the site which was a parking lot in a recreation area on Lake Shore Drive.  The next step was preparing the parking lot so that it looked like an RV park.  This consisted of blacking out the parking stripes and setting out utility pedestals made of plywood and PVC pipe along with picnic tables, trash cans and grills.  The Humbles then watched the final “dressing” (adding of interior props for realism) of the trailer before rehearsals and filming. The episode was aired April 15 on NBC and the trailer survived.

As part of a very interesting week in Chicago, Jerry and Louise were given a private tour of the studio and the sets of the shows “Chicago Fire” and “Chicago PD.”
